My New Nokia E72

Having had an E71 for a year now, it was exciting and exhilarating when my new E72 arrived at my door. Shiny Zodium black and ready to rumble! Having had such a seemless move into a full QWERTY keyboard with the E71 from my previous Nokia 88 series style phones (Good looks but no features), I was expecting everything. And what did I get? Well, it was good, but it wasn’t THAT good. Do I miss the E71? Well, after only 3 days of having an E72, I have to say YES!

Although the E72 is quicker, and has a supposedly better battery life and all that jazz, I have to admit – it just doesn’t seem as slick or as fast as the E71. Once thing which may contribute is the menu system, which definitely looks nicer with the jiggly icons, but doesn’t move through as quickly as my E71 did with the slower processor.

The integrated Google mail system seems to be fairly good. I certainly enjoy the feeling of Push email which comes from the Free Nokia Messenging service which is great. The GPS tool is also quite good, but seriously – as if you have to pay for a subscription!

There are a few bugs on this phone. One which annoys me more than others – the long press on the phone book key does not open up a New Contact window no matter what you do. This is likely to be fixed in the first firmware update that should be out sooner rather than later.

All in all, my first impressions of the E72 is that its a good phone, a definite improvement in functionality and integration with life as a whole, but for the current price, feel and feature set – I can’t say that its that much better than the E71. If you already have an E71, don’t bother upgrading unless you’re a sucker for new tech like I am. If you are a new purchaser to the Nokia E-series clan, then the E72 is sure to impress.

Some unusual features I love

- When you have multiple text messages to read, instead of sifting through all the ones you’ve opened, you just run the “cursor” upwards over the messaging icon and it comes up with a list of all your unread text messages. Very cool

- Opti-key – I really like it how you can scroll multiple selections at a time just by running your thumb from the very tip to the bottom of the optical key. Very nice when scrolling through the address book!
